Jun 2008
On June 18, Goods for Good coordinated a workshop with 15 community-based organizations (CBOs) in Lilongwe and Dowa districts in Malawi. The 60 participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas on the effective management of CBO initiatives and programs. The majority of the day was spent discussing partnerships between communities and international organizations (NGOs) such as G4G and how NGO's can develop more effective partnerships with communities to enhance community participation and sustainability. Suggestions from community members included encouraging foreigners to take the time to learn about Malawian culture before entering the communities and providing appropriate training to community members about financial management so they can effectively manage grants of funds or materials. The day was informative and successful for all participants. As one community member said, "I've learned how to run my CBO and be more united [with other CBOs]. I've learned about the positive and negative impacts of NGOs, and how to work with them well!"
